Shostka,Ukraine
limited edition print
A swimming pool under a vaulted white ceiling, ribbed arches running the length of the hall, empty red and yellow seating on both sides. At the far end, filling the whole back wall, a mosaic in red, blue and ochre — curving bands and spirals that read as strips of colour film unspooling. A man sits alone on a starting block.
The pool belonged to the Svema factory in Shostka, which made photographic film. The mosaic is an abstract composition referring to the flow of colour film, the plant's main product. Its artist is unknown.
From Yevgen Nikiforov's series Ukrainian Soviet Mosaics, a long-running photographic survey of monumental mosaic art across Ukraine.
