Nauka Sports Complex in Kyiv, Ukraine
limited edition print
Three terracotta figures stretch across the end wall of a sports complex, bodies elongated into long arcs against blue, gold and green. Around them, forms that read as seed pods, leaves and cells: the mosaic's vocabulary sits between the athletic and the botanical. Snow lies on the ledges and along the lower edge of the wall. Large sections of tesserae have fallen away, leaving raw grey patches across the sky.
The mosaic is Movement, made in 1969 by Halyna Zubchenko and Hryhorii Pryshedko for the Nauka Sports Complex in Kyiv.
From Yevgen Nikiforov's series Ukrainian Soviet Mosaics, a photographic survey of monumental mosaic art across Ukraine.
