Gull mobile
kinetic sculpture
A gull cut from solid ash; wings pitched at different angles. The planes are faceted and left bare, the grain is the only ornament. From the body a thread drops to a small carved fish, hanging just below. It hangs from a slender balance arm and moves on the air in the room.
Valkeda is an Eastern European studio working in a Nordic minimalist idiom. The name comes from a form of the Old Veps word for clean, white, with the stress on the first syllable. The studio describes its approach this way: forms as simple as beauty allows, and as ornamented as measure allows — emotional, but never overloaded. Restraint and accord.
