Tashkent/Toshkent. Art for Architecture. Monumental Art since 1953.
Across Tashkent, monumental mosaics transform modernist architecture into something distinctly rooted in place. Geometric abstraction, vivid colour and references to Islamic ornament appear across façades, public buildings and residential structures, creating one of the city’s most recognisable visual languages.
Tashkent/Toshkent. Art for Architecture explores this remarkable body of work from 1953 onwards, with particular attention to the ambitious reconstruction of the Uzbek capital following the earthquake of 1966. Artists including Alexander, Nikolai and Pyotr Jarsky developed new approaches to architectural decoration, combining modernist design with techniques and motifs drawn from the region’s artistic traditions.
Through extensive photography and research, the book documents mosaics, reliefs, decorative panels and other works created for Tashkent’s built environment, while examining the artists and circumstances behind them.
Both an architectural record and a study of monumental art, it reveals how artists helped shape the identity of modern Tashkent and why this distinctive heritage has become increasingly important to preserve.
