Steelmakers, Mariupol Railways Station, Ukraine
limited edition print
A waiting hall under a low white ceiling, rows of empty orange seats on both sides. The back wall is covered with mosaics depicting steelworkers leaning into their tools around a blazing furnace, framed by sharp bands of color. On the right, a plain wooden door with a small sign cut into the composition.
The hall belonged to Mariupol Railway Station. The mosaic, Steelmakers, shows the full cycle of steel casting. Its artists, Lel Kuzminkov and Valentyn Konstantinov, sketched it on the floor of the city's steelworks, and it was completed in 1974. It was destroyed in 2022 during the Russian army's occupation of Mariupol.
From Yevgen Nikiforov's series Ukrainian Soviet Mosaics, a long-running photographic survey of monumental mosaic art across Ukraine.
