Horses in the Steppe
jacquard tapestry
A herd in red, black and sand on an unbroken cream ground. There is no horizon, no ground line, nothing but the animals themselves. The flat silhouettes and the three-color palette put this somewhere between Scythian metalwork and black-figure vase painting.
Valery and Vitaly Liba have been weaving together for more than twenty-five years. Born on the White Sea and raised on the Black Sea coast, they draw their palette from the southern landscape: feather-grass steppes, acacia gardens, and the shifting light of the sea. Each piece begins with months of drawings before a single thread is chosen.
The tapestry is woven on a Jacquard loom, a nineteenth-century invention programmed with punch cards and considered a direct ancestor of the modern computer.
