Deve Speckled Camel
sculptural ceramic candle holder
Deve is Azerbaijani for camel, and this one rests low to the ground with its legs folded beneath it. Two humps rise from the body as the long neck curves forward. Two sockets are set into the back between the humps. A cream glaze pools into green across the back and speckles down the flanks, settling unevenly over the form.
Farman Gasimov is the Azerbaijani artist behind the piece, a sculptor and ceramicist who also holds a doctorate in art history. The two sides of his practice inform one another. He draws on historical sources, including ancient Azerbaijani animal figures and motifs from the eleventh-century Tabriz school, without treating them as replicas. His work has been exhibited in Baku and internationally, including at the Today Art Museum in Beijing.
This piece is from Dolasan, one of two collections Gasimov has designed for CHELEBI.
Also available in emerald.
