Deve Emerald Camel

Deve is Azerbaijani for camel, and this one is down on the ground with its legs folded under it. Two humps rise from the body, the long neck curves up. Two sockets are set into the back between the humps. A deep emerald glaze runs over the whole form, pooling almost black in the hollows and breaking to pale green where it thins across the curves.

Farman Gasimov is the Azerbaijani artist behind the piece, a sculptor and ceramicist who also holds a doctorate in art history. The two sides of his practice inform one another. He draws on historical sources, including ancient Azerbaijani animal figures and motifs from the eleventh-century Tabriz school, without treating them as replicas. His work has been exhibited in Baku and internationally, including at the Today Art Museum in Beijing.
