Birds in the Sky
jacquard tapestry
Hundreds of birds repeat across a woven blue field in white outline and deep indigo. Near the centre, a single larger indigo bird breaks the rhythm, creating a quiet moment of difference within the flock.
Valery and Vitaly Liba have been weaving together for more than twenty-five years. Born on the White Sea and raised on the Black Sea coast, they draw their palette from the southern landscape: feather-grass steppes, acacia gardens, and the shifting light of the sea. Each piece begins with months of drawings before a single thread is chosen.
The tapestry is woven on a Jacquard loom, a nineteenth-century invention programmed with punch cards and considered a direct ancestor of the modern computer.
